The Cat Returns (猫の恩返し, Neko no Ongaeshi, lit. The Cat's payment) is a Japanese animated film that taught by Hiroyuki Morita, published by Studio Ghibli and released theatrically in Japan in 2002 and the United States in 2005.

Received an Excellence Prize at the 2002 Japan Media Arts Festival.


The story follows a girl called Haru, a quiet, shy and unassuming high school student with a long-suppressed ability to talk to the cat. One day he saves a darkly colored, strange-eyed cat from being hit by a truck on a busy road. The cat turns out to be Lune, Prince of the Cat Kingdom. In return, the cat shower him with gifts of catnip and mice - and then he offered the Prince's hand in marriage. Mixed his reply is taken as a yes.

Immersed in desperation over this unwanted growth, Haru heard a kind of female voice telling him to seek the Cat Bureau. Haru meets Muta, a large white cat that voice told him to look for direction, that leads him there to meet the Baron, which happens to a cat figurine given life through the hard work of his artist, and Toto, a shiny black stones come to life much like the Baron. Soon after meeting them, Haru and Muta are taken to the Cat Kingdom by force, leaving Toto and the Baron in the human world just followed them. The Baron and his feathered friends to finally see the entrance to the Cat Kingdom to Earth - five feet of lakes forming a cat's.

Haru was conducted in a feast in the castle of the Cat Kingdom and he begins to slowly turn to a cat - with brown paws, ears and beard, even more than all people - so that he would make a suitable bride for Prince. The feast, the Baron (in disguise) dances to Haru as part of entertainment, shows him more he loses himself in the kingdom, the cat will be like him, and that he was to discover his true self; new findings The fight and kill the warden that he might rescue him. They are helped by Yuki, a white female cat that works as a servant in the palace and who had tried to warn Haru to leave the Cat Kingdom before he was taken to the castle. Haru, the Baron, and Muta's escape leads them through a maze in a tower, containing a portal back to Haru's world. The King goes through a series of efforts to keep it in Cat Kingdom long enough for Haru remain trapped in the form of a cat so can she still has her as his daughter-in -law, going so far as the actual collapsing the tower.

Lune and his bodyguard back to the Cat Kingdom to state that the King will not act on his behalf and he has no desire to marry Haru; instead that he planned to propose to Yuki. Also, Muta was declared to be a notorious criminal Kingdom (having devoured a whole lake of fish in a session), and Yuki as a unique voice like Haru advised to go to the Cat Bureau. In his childhood Haru is saved Yuki from hunger by giving him the cookies he fish for food, and Yuki now repaid his kindness.

Eventually, Haru, Muta and the Baron Cat escape the land, with the help of Prince Lune and Toto, and Haru discovers his true self and tells the Baron how he came to think of him. He tells her he admires his honesty but it left unclear whether he will return to his love. Haru return to earth people with more confidence; to study his former fire has broken up with his girlfriend, he just answered, "It does not matter anymore".
